Deaf Advocate

REPORTS TO DEAF ADVOCACY PROJECT (DAP) COORDINATOR
PART-TIME, 20 HOURS/WEEK

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Provide effective, culturally competent domestic violence services to Deaf/Hard of Hearing victims/survivors of domestic violence
• Respond to requests from Deaf/Hard of Hearing victims of domestic and sexual violence and connect these victims to local services
• Work closely with the Deaf Advocacy Project Coordinator to identify unmet needs in the Deaf community
• Provide outreach to community organizations
• Provide back-up support to DAP volunteer advocates and DV programs staff assisting Deaf victims
• Refer clients to local and appropriate resources

Other duties include:
• Complete and submit reports in a timely and accurate manner
• Maintain the highest degree of confidentiality
• Attend supervision, staff and community meetings
• Participate in a 40-hour training and ongoing training related to domestic violence
• Work from a philosophy of empowerment
• Other duties as assigned

Qualifications:
• BA degree or AA degree and direct human services experience
• Ability to uphold the mission, vision, and ethics of NJCEDV
• Commitment to social justice and deep understanding of the intersection between ending violence and eradicating oppression
• Ability to effectively communicate in American Sign Language
• Willingness and ability to work with people of diverse ethnicity, socio-economic circumstance, religion, culture, and sexual orientation
• Interest in obtaining a strong knowledge and understanding of domestic violence, sexual assault, and oppression based dynamics
• Skills and education necessary to perform the duties of the position
• Involvement in the Deaf/Hard of Hearing communities
• Dependable auto transportation, valid NJ State Driver’s license and proof of insurance; clean driving record
