Providing Services for Male Victims of Domestic Violence
April 18, 2018
Catherine Hernesh, MA

Domestic violence has and does impact women at a disproportional rate compared to men. Therefore, as the domestic violence movement evolved, domestic violence shelters, advocates, and activists have focused on getting female victims of domestic violence safe, stable, and secure. This full day training is designed to help domestic violence advocates recognize, understand, and appropriately support the male victims of domestic violence who are now speaking up. Who exactly constitutes a male client, including heterosexual, gay, bisexual, and transgender males, as well as the impact of their victimization and appropriate interventions will be covered. Additionally, the Federal and State laws regarding services to non-traditional clients, including the PDVA, Victims of Crime Act, Americans with Disability Act, and Violence Against Women’s Act will be reviewed. Participants will gain an understanding of best screening practices, the requirement to provide comparable services in both a residential and non-residential setting, the need for appropriate therapeutic interventions, and potential damages for discriminatory practices.
