Title: How the Disease of Addiction Affects Victims of Domestic Violence

Presented by: Tamu King

5 DVS Credits: Substance Abuse

Substance abuse disorder is extremely prevalent in our society, and a common co-occurring disorder in families experiencing domestic violence. In order to better understand this disease and the impact that it has on domestic violence victims struggling with addiction, we will look at the relationship between addiction and trauma caused by experiencing abuse and violence.  Through the use of media, group participation and lecture, the following will be highlighted during the workshop: the effects of addiction on the ability to make decisions for oneself and/or for one’s children; how it affects children directly; how to advocate for someone who is struggling with substance abuse disorder; and how to support survivors using a strength based approach.
