Post Separation Power and Control when Children are Involved

May 22 @ 10:00 am - 4:00 pm

Presented by: Leslie Malkin, JD, DVS

What happens after a battered mother leaves the abusive relationship? Far too often, the abuse escalates in new and frightening ways. This training will examine the different post-separation power and control tactics frequently exploited by batterers as well as the ways systems and institutions unknowingly collude with batterers. We will look at how batterers’ power and control tactics change and their impact on both the mother and her children. We’ll look at harmful interactions with courts, child welfare systems, and law enforcement. Relocation and visitation issues will be reviewed from the post-separation perspective. Finally, we will spend a significant amount of time exploring litigation abuse, discussing what it is, its impact on mothers and their children, why it’s allowed to occur, and some suggested remedies to prevent it.
